Dear Noel,
Last year (July1996) BP confirmed that "Oil production from Beatrice Field is up some 25%, reversing the earlier field decline." Prior to that, BP had been making operational changes to increase gross fluid throughput. BP were uncertain as to which of the changes, or the BOS* [Titan Process] treatments which had by then been applied over several years, was responsible for the increase in oil production as opposed to the additional water which was both injected and produced.
They agreed to work with Bridgefireld Consultants Limited to quantify the portion of this extra oil which was due to the BOS process, since we had already shown that the ratio of water to oil was decreasing in individual wells, when it would otherwise be expected to increase. Their negotiations for the sale of the field intervened and it is only recently that Talisman, the new owners, have been able to resume the co-operation which BP had promised last year.
These studies will be thorough and complex and it may be some time before the results are published, but from the production data which we have seen to date, it is clear that the improvement due to BOS is responsible for the largest part of the reversal in decline and 25% increase in production.
We have noted a wave of additional oil (reduced water cuts) passing from well to well across the field in 1995/6. This effect caused one well to produce again, after being shut in for some years, and then to flow dry oil for a limited period before its water cut once more increased. We may soon be able to quantify this effect and then to plan the sequence of BOS treatments so that an even greater improvement in performance is gained, than at Beatrice.
Yours faithfully,
Tom Radford,
